What is sanquhar pattern?

The Sanquhar pattern, is not one pattern but a variety of patterns, some of the first designs are said to originate in the 17th to 18th century, although no exact date can be given. 

A pattern comprises of two, often contrasting colours, creating a geometric design. A large number of these "patterns" are based on a grid of 11x11.  See below for graphic representations of each pattern and their names.
